Saphir Haus
Nestled above the city of Hamilton, Montana, this beautiful home is surrounded by the majestic Bitterroot and Sapphire Mountains. The homeowners, former Chicago natives, fell in love with the region and envisioned a retreat that embraced their love of the mountains and the serenity of nature. With three separate structures—the main house, a recreational barn, and a bunkhouse—the property was designed to support a lifestyle full of cooking, gathering, and outdoor living.
To preserve the farmhouse charm inherent to the community, we modernized all three buildings while respecting their character. The main house was fully gutted, and our first priority was to maximize the views: we replaced the existing windows with larger ones and added new openings where possible. The kitchen was reimagined with the client’s culinary needs in mind—we enclosed the dining room wall and extended the footprint to include lounge seating and a direct connection to the outdoor kitchen. Vaulted wood ceilings elevated the office and primary bedroom, while unnecessary posts were removed to improve the flow of the space. A cozy and serene palette flows from room to room with several different textures such as plaster walls, wallcovering, wood panelling, custom metal elements, unique artwork and lighting. Richer tones—like the deep green mudroom, screened porch, and blue office—add depth while keeping the atmosphere calm and cohesive. The project continues with the addition of horse stables and the finishing details of the outbuildings.
